The Sword of the Crucifixion

Mark 14
42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrays me is at hand.
43  And immediately, while he spoke came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44 And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.

Men with weapons of war came after the One sent from the God of all Peace to help all mankind find peace with God.
In the strength of their flesh they brought weapons to subdue, to conquer and to overcome. Their sweaty, sin-stained hands gripped the very tools that symbolized the spiritual power of the One they came to harm.  The razor sharp blades were drawn in anticipation of silencing the mouth of the innocent One who preached the way of salvation they were rejecting.
They did not know the ironic foreshadowing spoken by their powerless blades of steel.
.
Ephesians 6:17
And take… the sword  of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
They intended their blades to cut through weak flesh, but they dangled uselessly in the air. The real power is in the spiritual Sword.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and powerful,
and sharper than any two-edged sword,
piercing even to the division of soul and spirit,
and of joints and marrow,
and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

At the moment of mankind’s greatest sin, hating and rejection the Savior of the World,  their weapons had no power.  They could not overpower the One who willingly was going to die for their sins, and the One who would willingly give up His own spirit.  He alone had the power over sin and death and hell, even His own death.  They could not take His life, He gave it.

But our Sword, our written, God-breathed Word of God, has power over all the powers of evil.  It has the power to convert our souls through faith and give us a home in Heaven.

Our Sword has the power to kill the flesh, the Old Man, and give life to the New Man.

Our Sword has power because their swords didn’t.

Those wicked men foolishly went to the Savior with their swords,  expecting a battle.

We wise believers need to go into battle for the Savior with our Sword.
