Sometimes all our serious ambitions and troubles in life
end up running like gerbils on wheels in our brains.
We feel like we might have to know the answer
to every parenting dilemna we may ever face.
But, everytime we think we know something about parenting,
we have another kid who’s different than the others,
and our theories are down the drain.
It may weigh us down that we really don’t have
the answers to world peace,
we’d be happy to have just a little peace
in our households.
We daily live with the sad reality that being a grown-up
isn’t as much fun as we thought it was going to be.
We have to worry about money.
Suddenly, we have to be concerned about our health,
and we really can’t eat candy all day like we dreamed.
Even our weight can weigh us down.
Do you remember standing on a scale as a kid?
Never.
Sure, cars are fun, but they need gas in the tank
and repairs on the engine.
Not to mention the mountain of Cheerios that has to be occasionally
vaccuumed out of all the nooks and crannies.
I was driving alone, silently and deeply contemplating
the deep and serious things of my adult life.
Then,
I
saw
this.
Just like that,
the absurd notion transported me back into
the carelessness of childhood.
I laughed and laughed and laughed,
but also rejoiced.
Because I really do know what life is all about –
and it’s not the Hokey-Pokey.
As I keep seeking the Lord in prayer and in His Word,
I will find the answers I need to my life issues,
and those gerbils in my brain will come to rest.
Cuz’ even they know,
the Hokey-Pokey
isn’t what it’s all about.
